WhatsApp to Introduce Paid Features: Major Changes Ahead for Users

WhatsApp, one of the most widely used messaging platforms globally, is gearing up for a significant transformation that could impact millions of its users. Meta, the parent company behind the app, has announced new features that will introduce monetisation through subscriptions and advertisements – a marked departure from WhatsApp’s long-standing tradition of free services.

Subscriptions and Ads to Debut in ‘Updates’ Tab

In an official announcement made on Monday, 16th June, Meta revealed that it plans to revamp the “Updates” tab on WhatsApp. This section, currently used for personal updates and statuses, will soon feature paid content and targeted advertising. These changes are intended to provide content creators and businesses with new ways to generate revenue and connect with audiences.

The move aligns WhatsApp with platforms like Instagram and YouTube, where users can subscribe for exclusive content. On WhatsApp, users will be able to support their favourite news or interest channels through paid subscriptions. Each subscription will last for 30 days and provide access to exclusive updates and benefits unavailable to non-subscribers. According to Business Insider, channel operators will be allowed to set their own pricing, while WhatsApp will retain around 10% of the subscription earnings as commission.

Promotional Tools for Creators and Businesses

The upcoming features include:

  • Channel Subscriptions: Users can subscribe to preferred creators or news outlets to access exclusive content. This feature is designed to give creators a new income stream while offering followers early or enhanced content.

  • Promoted Channels: Administrators will be able to boost the visibility of their channels through advertisements shown in the channel directory. This will help users discover new, potentially relevant content.

  • Status Advertisements: Businesses can promote their products or services within the status section. Users may see these ads and can directly start a chat with the company to enquire or make purchases.

These tools are primarily aimed at helping brands and content creators expand their reach and monetise their presence on the platform. Importantly, these monetisation elements will remain within the “Updates” section and will not interfere with regular, private chats.

Private Chats to Remain Free and Secure

Meta has clarified that the traditional chatting experience will not be affected. “Everything remains the same for users who only use WhatsApp for chatting,” the company emphasised. This means that those who rely on the platform purely for messaging friends and family will continue to enjoy the service free of charge.

Despite these assurances, privacy advocates remain cautious. Meta stated that the end-to-end encryption protecting personal messages will continue to be upheld. However, concerns linger due to the company’s shift away from WhatsApp’s original ad-free philosophy. Before Meta’s $19 billion acquisition of WhatsApp in 2014, co-founder Brian Acton famously promised “No ads! No games! No gimmicks!”—a stance that is now evolving in light of new business models.

Gradual Rollout Expected

The exact launch date for these features has not been confirmed. Meta has indicated that the updates will be introduced gradually over the coming months. The company argues that the integration of ads and subscriptions has been carefully designed to avoid disrupting personal communication – a key differentiator compared to other platforms.

With over two billion users, WhatsApp’s pivot towards monetisation marks a significant shift in the digital messaging landscape. Whether users embrace the changes or push back remains to be seen, but one thing is clear: WhatsApp as we know it is about to change.
