Gulabi Gawas (45) succumbed to monkey fever which is also known as kyasanur forest disease (KFD) at the Goa medical college and hospital (GMC). She hailed from Keri in Sattari taluka. Gawas is considered the first victim of the disease this year.
“A middle-aged female was refered by the Sankhali Primary Health Centre to the Goa Medical College (GMC) after she was diagnosed with KFD with bilateral pneumonia. The patient was kept under Intensive Care Unit (ICU) as her condition kept deteriorating. She expired on Monday morning as she went into shock acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS),” said state epidemiologist Dr Utkarsh Betodkar in the Navhind Times report.
Of the 422 cases that were tested for KFD, 75 have been positive. New cases in affected areas such as Valpoi, Kasarvanem, Ponda and Savoi Verem are rising Dr Betodkar further stated in the report.
He also informed that over 5000 people have failed to take the second dose of vaccination against the disease. He urged that cases of fever should not be overlooked by the people in the affected areas and should be referred to the nearest health centre.
