In 2004, a minor girl, 16 years of age, was rescued by the Goa police during a raid in Baina (Vasco). The mother of the minor was accused of pushing her into prostitution. 13 years later, the Goa Children’s Court (GCC) has sentenced the mother to seven years of rigorous imprisonment. GCC Judge Vandana Tendulkar delivered her judgement earlier this week.
However, two other accused in the case are still absconding (including a woman) and the police have not yet been able to catch them. The minor was rescued from the flat of the absconding woman.
The mother has been convicted under the relevant acts of Immoral Traffic (Prevention) Act, 1956 and the Goa Children’s Act, 2003. Besides the seven years of RI, a fine of Rs. 1 lakh has been imposed on the mother.
