Goa Chief Minister Laxmikant Parsekar along with State officials have been asked by Minister of Railways Suresh Prabhakar Prabhu, to assist the Railways on their on-going projects for early completion.
A meeting between the officials of the State Government and South Western Railway (SWR) and Konkan Railway Corporation Limited (KRCL) took place this Monday to be updated on the progress of railway projects in Goa. The meeting was presided by Mr. Prabhu and Laxmikant Parsekar.
The South Western Railway Projects:
- Track Doubling from Madgaon to Kulem
- Road Overbridge at LC nos. 17, 19 and 25
Konkan Railway Projects:
- 5 Road Overbridges have to be constructed
In the meeting the Minister sought the assistance of the Chief Minister and State officials in the matter of acquiring land required for doubling of tracks and road overbridges.
Present at the meeting were General Manager of South Western Railway A.K. Gupta, Goa Chief Secretary R.K. Srivastava and Chairman and Managing Director of KRCL Sanjay Gupta.
The doubling of the 50-km track falling between Kulem and Madgaon between Hosapete-Hubballi-Londa-Vasco-da-gama is one of the projects that would enhance line capacity greatly. However the work regarding the same is to start initially on the 35 km Kulem-Madgaon stretch in Goa. The single line is saturated currently, due to constraints in the Castlerock-Kulem ghat section.
It is being reported that once the doubling project is complete the line capacity would be enhanced and that would result in running more passenger and freight trains. This would increase the revenue as well as improve Goa and the northern Karnataka region’s connectivity. Also economies of both States would improve.
This is one among many projects that is said to directly impact the traffic to ports in Goa and in movement of goods between the two States.
