Election Commission of India (ECI) announced on Thursday that by-polls for Panaji and Valpoi assembly constituencies to be held on Aug 23. A model code of conduct in North Goa has come into force since the dates were announced.
The constituencies of Valpoi and Panaji had fallen vacant after their respective resigned on March 16 and May 10. Vishwajeet Rane resigned as a Congress MLA to contest on a BJP ticket and Siddharth kuncalienker resigned to make way for Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar to be elected to the assembly.
The nomination process will begin once the poll notification will be issued on July 29. The interested candidates will have to file their nomination papers before August 5. Nominations will be scrutinised on August 7 and the last date for withdrawal of nominations has been set as August 9.
Roy Naik is most likely to be the candidate for the Valpoi constituency. Naik is the son of Congress MLA from Ponda Ravi Naik. While the Congress is yet to announce its candidate in Panaj. The BJP has already announced the candidature of Vishwajeet Rane from Valpoi and Manohar Parrikar from Panaji.
Due to the code of conduct, the government is restricted from making any political announcement that may in any way influence the voters.
