Goa Tourism Development Corporation (GTDC) Chairman Nilesh Cabral mentioned to a daily recently that the corporation will develop its own app to provide taxi services to visitors and residents of Goa.
“We will develop our own app and taxis can be booked through the app. We will not allow Ola and Uber… we are not considering that. GTDC will have its own serice,” Cabral was quoted by the Goan.
The development comes after a online petition on Change.org went viral demanding that cab aggregator services like Ola and Uber be introduced in Goa. The petitioner complained of a Goan taxi drivers of not using meters and charging exorbitant fares.
“Tourism is the backbone of Goa’s economy and tourists across the world and India are used to services like Ola and Uber, it’s time to allow them to operate in Goa. Goan taxi drivers never use the taxi meters required by law and charge exorbitant rates for their services,” Sardesai said in his petition uploaded on change.org.
The transport department in 2014 had tried introducing Ola cab services in Goa but the attempt met with a heavy resistance from cab drivers in Goa. An attempt to introduce digital meters in Goan taxis was also opposed by taxis owners.
