Goans will have 40 per cent reservations in the National Institute of Technology (NIT) set up in Goa. This is likely to be implemented from the next academic year of 2017-18.
In 2012, reservation for Goans was a pre-condition set with the Union human resources development (HRD) ministry since Goa will bear the cost of setting up a separate facility for NIT.
NIT began operations in the state since 2010 in a temporary campus at the Goa Engineering College (GEC).
40 per cent will be reserved for Goans while 10 per cent will be reserved for union territories of Dadra Nagar Haveli, Diu and Daman and Lakshadweep.
Land has been acquired at Cuncolim for NIT campus to be built.
