Goa Water Resources Department (WRD) Minister Vinod Palyekar told the Legislative Assembly on Monday that the Goa government will curtail Karnataka and Maharashtra from diverting water from the Mhadei River at any cost. He was speaking during the question hour.
“Diversion of water from Mhadei basin by the State of Karnataka and Maharashtra will have adverse effect on Goa,” the minister said.
Palyekar also said that at present neither states are are executing construction work on River Mhadei. “However, so far Karnataka has done works like interconnecting conduit of about 4.5 kms, open canal of about 2.70Kms and part of head regulator,” he said.
The Minister said that work on an earthen dam on Kattika nallah was started by the Maharashtra government. It is a tributary of Virdi River.
