I will chase away tourists who don’t respect ‘Goan culture’, says Goa Tourism Minister

Goa’s Tourism Minister Manohar ‘Babu’ Ajgaonkar has kicked up a storm on Sunday after a video surfaced showing him threatening to chase away tourists who do not regard Goa’s culture. The comment comes a day after his cabinet colleague referred to certain section of domestic tourist as the ‘scum of the earth.’

Ajgaonkar was speaking at theĀ  inauguration of the Goa Food and Cultural Festival in Panaji on Friday. “The tourists who come here should take care of Goa’s culture and Goanness, otherwise I will chase them away. I will not listen to anyone. I am saying this clearly,” Ajgaonkar said.

“We have to preserve our Goan culture and Goanness. We do not want tourists who sell drugs, we do not want hotels which sell drugs,” he added.

Agriculture Minister Vijai Sardesai on Friday referred to domestic tourists as the ‘scum of the earth’, however, he clarified on Saturday that he was referring to only a section of the 6.5 million domestice tourists who visit the state.
