Goa Governor: Do not send your parents to old age homes or break your marriage

Goa's Governor Mridula Sinha

While speaking at the 29th annual convocation ceremony of Goa University, Goa’s Governor Mridula Sinha surprised the post graduate and doctorate students when she asked them to take some unusual vows. The event was attended by India’s President Pranab Mukherjee and Goa’s Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar.

“I want you to take four pledges. First, you will not send your parents to old age homes. Vivaah anivarya nahin, awashyak hai. Aap vivaah karne ke baad nahin todenge (marriage is not mandatory but important and that is why you will not break it after getting married),” the Governor said.

She urged them if they witnessed exploitation of women, they should help even if it means risking their lives. “Aapki nazar ke saamne jahan kahin bhi kisi yuvti ya aurat ke saath atyachar ho raha ho, wahan jaan par khel kar use bachayenge (you will risk your lives to come to the rescue of women facing exploitation),” she said.

The Governor emphasized on keeping the surroundings clean and asked students to contribute to the Swachh Bharat Abhiyan. “Swachh Bharat Abhiyan should go hand-in-hand alongside developmental issues and should not be treated merely as a cleanliness matter,” Sinha was quoted. The governor also mentioned that her dream was to see Goa rank first in the Swachh Bharat Mission.
