Yoga will now be one of the official subjects in the curriculum for students enrolled in Class I – IV. The subject will follow the content from a textbook that has been prepared by Baba Ramdev’s Patanjali Yog Peeth; a senior official informed the news today.
Director of education G.P. Bhat told reporters, “the (yoga training) scheme would be implemented by Goa Educational Development Corporation (GEDC) for a period of six years commencing from the ongoing academic year.”
Word is that the government may constitute a state-level ‘yoga cell’ comprising of yoga experts.
The contents of the textbook, ‘Khel-Khel Mein’ have been prepared by the Patanjali Yog Peeth based on the syllabus set by NCERT (National Council of Educational Research and Training).
Bhat added that, “a healthy approach towards education and life can be developed right from a young age via the most powerful yogic practises. Yoga at primary level will definitely help develop an effective system to create healthy citizens for the nation.”
The director of education also said that the addition of yoga would help solve the problems of stress, depression, lack of concentration, exam phobia, behavioural problems, relationship issues and drug addiction.
Initially the scheme will be selecting 15 government primary schools in each tehsil, which would have this addition in their education introduced as one of the subjects. A teacher from each school will be selected as a trainer for the class.
