Leader of Opposition and Quepem MLA Chandrakant ‘Babu’ Kavlekar and his elder brother Babal were granted anticipatory bail by the court yesterday in a case filed under the states gambling act.
The crime branch booked the brothers under relevant sections of the Goa Gambling Act after hundreds of matka (gambling) slips were found at the LoP’s house in a raid last month. The raids were conducted in relation to a disproportionate assets case.
Kavlekar and his wife Savitri are currently under investigation in a disproportionate assets case handled by the Anti Corruption Bureau (ACB).
Quepem MLA and his brother were granted anticipatory bail by District Court Judge B P Deshpande and were asked to deposit a surety of Rs 50,000 and Rs 20,000 respectively.
When Kavlekar was summoned by the Crime Branch for questioning, he had received interim anticipatory bail on September 23. The court through it’s order had restricted the police from arresting Kavlekar till his anticipatory bail application was disposed. He later appeared before the investigating officer for questioning.
