Goa to invest in cold storage facilities to decrease fish prices

The fish prices often escalate in Goa and to counter the trend, Agriculture Minister Vijai Sardesai has suggested building cold storage facilities in the state which might help bring down the fish prices.

“Till date the subsidy being provided by the fisheries department is being given to trawler owners. Fish exports cannot be regulated. Only way this can be done is to have huge cold storages,” Sardesai was quoted by ToI.

The Minister also said that cold storage facilities could be developed by the fisheries department or the department can tie up with private players.

“They can be incentivized by giving an industrial plot at concessional rates, Sardesai said. He proposed a concept called agro cloud where the buyer and the seller of produce are both available online,” Sardesai concluded.
