In a latest move, Goa government has decided to prepone the Panchayat polls to June 17. Earlier the polls were supposed to be held on 25th June however CM Manohar Parrikar has stated San Jao to be the primary reason for the advancement in the date.
This is the third re-scheduling of the Panchayat election in the state. Earlier the Parsekar government had decided on May 23rd for the Election Day of local bodies. CM Parrikar after changing the date said, “We rescheduled panchayat polls due to San Jao. Few ministers too requested me.”
Goa Congress Unit had led a protest against the Goa government for postponing the date. “These elections should not be postponed to June since the month marks the start of monsoon and thus will make it difficult for prospective voters to participate in the electoral process,” Luizinho Faleiro said in a letter. Faleiro had also accused the state government of “manipulating the tenets of democracy by putting off elections.”
