A complaint with the Election Commission (EC) and the Goa police has been registered by the Bhartiya Janata Party (BJP) against unknown persons in regards to sharing a fake news report quoting Goa Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar.
The fake news report quotes Parrikar to have allegedly said that he will return to the centre as the Defence Minister if he loses the by-poll in Panaji. “These elections are important for me, but if I lose (August 23 by-poll), I can always shift to Delhi as Defence Minister,” the fake news clip by website www.primenews-goa.com states.
“An attempt has been made by circulating distorted and false news item on social media like Facebook, WhatsApp, and others, to create falsehood, malign the image of our candidate Manohar Parrikar and to misguide the electorate of Panaji constituency,” the complaint filed with the Election Commission and Goa Police Cyber Cell said. It was filed by Goa Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) General Secretary Pundalik Rautdessai.
Parrikar expressed his confidence on wining the Panaji by-poll to reporters at the Goa BJP headquarters, after the complaint was filed. “I am meeting people and asking them to elect me with a huge margin. Secondly, the rumour did not pick up because people in Panaji know my victory is sure. The only question mark is on the victory margin — whether it is 6,000, 8,000, or 9,000. Some people say it is going to be 10,000,” Parrikar was quoted by IANS.
The by-polls for Valpoi and Panaji assembly constituencies will be held on August 23. Parrikar is contesting against Congress’ Girish Chodankar and Goa Suraksha Manch’s Anand Shirodkar.
