As per reports a major fire engulfed the Kadamba bus stand in Panaji on Monday morning. Directorate of Fire and Emergency Services had pressed at least 10 to 12 fire tender vehicles to deal with the fire.
Transport Director Nikhil Dessai informed reporters that two major sections of the RTO office that dealt with enforcement and registration of vehicles have been gutted. He further informed that the office will be shut for the next three days.
The fire is said to have started at 5:45 a.m. today. Smoke bellowing out of the super market was noticed by a bus driver at 6 a.m. He soon informed other drivers along with the fire brigade. The fire has been brought under control.
Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar has visited the site. He has asked a notice to be issued to the management of the supermarket.
The exact cause of the fire is yet to be determined but Desai has said that a short circuit in the supermarket located below may have been the cause. He has estimated that 1/4 of registration records may have been gutted. The Director has reposed faith in his staff to put the office on track soon.
The losses have been estimated to be above Rs.1 crore.
