The party seems to have gone from bad to worse. It has learnt nothing from the 2012 defeat and seems to revive itself on the same lines as earlier. Congress MLA Vishwajit Rane in early August had made statements to choose candidates in the constituencies of Mayem, Bicholim, Sankhali, Poriem and Valpoi. Rane even said that candidates finalised by Goa Pradesh Congress Comittee (GPCC) in Mayem, Bicholim, Sankhali will not be accepted. However he later faced ire of Congress and denied having made earlier claims. Dynastic politics was one of the reasons why the party lost power besides anti-incumbency.
Besides recent contradictory remarks by Goa pradesh Congress committee president Luizinho Faleiro and All India Congress Committee (AICC) general secretary and Goa desk in-charge Digvijay Singh paint a dark picture. “We are not against casinos” said Singh while Faleiro had admitted that granting licenses to casinos was a mistake. Hours later Faliero addressed a meeting in Shiroda and called for an opinion poll to decide the future of casinos in Goa.
Party MLA Mauvin Gondinho had already made his affiliations BJP clear in the 2014 General elections. It is only time till he contests the upcoming polls on a BJP ticket. His appointment as the Chairman of South Goa Planning and Development Authority (SGPDA) tells all.
Loss of citadel
Curtorim constituency is a strong hold of Congress MLA Aleixo Reginaldo Lourenco. He is even slated for an easy victory. However a question arises, on whose ticket? It may seem that Lourenco who in past has been dismayed by the Congress, might surprise everyone by contesting on a GFP ticket. It is key to remember, it was Vijay Sardessai who managed Lourenco’s general election campaign in 2014. At a time when fellow Congress party MLA Mauvin Godinho was working against him.
BJP is slated to field a strong candidate against Lourenco by possibly giving the ticket to Former Margao muncipal council chairperson and present councillor Arthur D’Silva. D’Silva was earlier a close associate of Congress MLA Digamber Kamat but joined the BJP in April this year. He has supporters in Curtorim, Fatorda and Margao.
If this wasn’t enough Shalom Sardinha is slated to fight as an independent in the constituency. Further dividing congress votes. It seems the party may also suffer from losing Atanasio ‘Babush’ Monserrate, who won two seats for the party in 2012.
The party has lost its past grandeur. Faliero is making all efforts to pull it out of the quagmire the party currently is in. Chances of it making a comeback seem very slim this election.
