BJP criticises article in Church bulletin that compares it to the Nazis

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has criticised a political article in the recent issue of Renovação bulletin which is published by the Archdiocese of Goa and Daman. The party has alleged that the article was meant to hurt it’s prospects in the recently concluded by-elections in Panaji and Valpoi assembly constituency.

The party further said that it is understandable the Archbishop of Goa and Daman Filipe Neri Ferrão may not have known about the article beforehand but urged the him to keep an eye on the content it produces.

The state BJP spokesperson, Nilesh Cabral stated that the Archbishop was a nice person but he should tone down strongly-worded articles in the church bulletin being published from the Archbishop’s house. Also, make sure the staff working for the publication are responsible people.

“The BJP is not bothered if the article is defamatory or not, however anything that is published from the Archbishop’s House is a revered document for us,” he opined. He pointed that voters from the catholic dominated areas had voted sensibly during the by-election.

The article had criticised the BJP with very strong words even to the extent of comparing it to Adolf Hitler’s Nazi party during the 1930s and 40s. The article urged the voters to vote against communal forces in order to stop the march of fascism in the nation.

“Similar Nazism was at that time popular in Germany, where 100 per cent almost Catholics (were) supported by the Church,” Cabral claimed and informed of his intentions to write a personal letter about the same to the Archbishop.

The BJP spokesperson further informed that his party had always stood by the Catholic community. It has supported issues like grants given to the English primary schools. This proves that the perception of BJP being dominated by the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) is wrong.

In regards to the fact finding committee that was appointed by a church body to understand the recent incidents of desecration of crosses and Catholic cemeteries across Goa, Cabral said, “First of all, this committee maliciously timed the release of its report with the election to launch a veiled attack on the BJP.”

He claimed that the police had done a good job in catching the culprit.
