Atanasio ‘Babush’ Monserrate, the former St Cruz MLA, who lost the 2017 assembly elections in Panaji, will be contesting in the upcoming by-elections under the Congress banner from the same constituency, which has been vacated by current MLA, Sidharth Kuncalienker to accommodate Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar.
“I am free to join any party, so I will join the Congress to contest the bypoll from Panaji,” stated Monserrate. – TOI
He added that despite not having a full-fledged team to work for him, he is hopeful for a win. It was the same case in the run-up to the February 4 polls, he explained, and still he lost by a small margin.
Confident of a win, he claimed that the minority community that voted for AAP in previous month’s election will now support him in the forthcoming polls and he will defeat Parrikar.
Keen on contesting the 2015 by-election from Panaji following Parrikar’s elevation to the Union Cabinet, Monserrate pulled out at the last minute and actively backed Kuncalienker. Later, Monserrate expressed that he would happily contest against Parrikar for the Panaji constituency if the latter would quit the defence ministry and battle it out in the assembly elections.
